Adapt, Adopt or Die: Leading Expert On Why Technology Isn’t Optional for UK SMEs
26th September 2025

In today’s fast-moving, highly connected market, UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face a stark choice: adapt, adopt, or risk falling behind.
The scale of opportunity is enormous, with research suggesting that SMEs could unlock £77.3 billion in additional revenue by matching the most digitally advanced peers. Economic pressures, changing customer expectations, digital-first competitors, and regulatory demands mean standing still is no longer an option.
Roy Shelton, the CEO of the Connectus Group, is a leading expert in this area. He says SMEs are now increasingly competing with agile start-ups and established businesses that use data, automation and technology to deliver faster, cheaper, and more personalised services.
He said: “Customers also expect seamless digital experiences, from instantly accessible websites to round-the-clock support and smooth online interaction.
“With operating costs rising in areas such as energy, staffing and raw materials, technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity. It enables automation of repetitive tasks, improved efficiency, and protection of profit margins. At the same time, cybersecurity, data protection regulations (such as GDPR), certifications and supply chain requirements are now standard expectations. Ignoring these fundamentals can lead to costly legal issues and reputational damage.
“Being static is effectively choosing to lose. Adapting and adopting technology strategically is how SMEs secure their future.”
The benefits of digital adoption are clearly backed by government research that shows SMEs with strong digital capabilities grow revenues by 4.4% and reduce costs by 4.3%. Those with a robust web presence grow more than twice as fast, export twice as much, and create twice as many jobs compared to less digitally-enabled peers.
However, the UK still trails its European neighbours. Only 22% of UK SMEs use e-commerce, and fewer than 20% use software to share information across their organisation. In comparison, 40% of SMEs in France and over 55% in Germany use such tools.
Here Mr Shelton outlines the top technologies transforming the UK SME landscape:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation
“AI adoption increased from 25% to 35% in 2024, bringing productivity gains of up to 133%. From automating simple tasks such as data entry and scheduling, to chatbots and demand forecasting, AI tools help level the playing field. Resources and workshops exist to support SMEs in unlocking these opportunities.”
Cybersecurity and Compliance
“In the past year, 42% of SMEs experienced a cyber-attack, with the average cost of recovery £7,960. Proactive measures such as Cyber Essentials certification, vulnerability scanning, and penetration testing protect operations and build client confidence.”
Connectivity and Communications
“Reliable connectivity is the backbone of digital transformation. Fibre broadband, secure Wi-Fi, remote access, and unified communications enable teams to collaborate effectively and customers to access services without disruption. Without these, other digital investments cannot succeed.”
Cloud Platforms and Workflow Automation
“Cloud-based systems reduce upfront costs, add scalability, and streamline processes. Automation tools free staff to focus on higher-value work. UK SMEs plan to invest £60.3 billion in technology this year, with cloud and automation leading the way.”
Data Analytics and Digital Marketing
“Using data to understand customer behaviour, predict demand, and make better decisions is increasingly vital. 87% of small businesses now have websites, and 70% use online marketing. Businesses using digital marketing are far more likely to be profitable. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems alone typically boost sales revenue by around 29%.
“Effectively using technology and digital tools drives measurable business results. Partnering with experienced providers can unlock these benefits while reducing complexity and risk.
